Okay, I have purchased and downloaded the game. (Tried earlier but it wouldn't accept payment.) No idea what to do now. First thing I see is a request for more $ to subscribe to something called Realms and an offer for a free download for the game for Win10. Do I have to get that or is the one I just got OK?
Hi Nina. Minecraft Realms wasn't around last year so I had to Google it to see what it was. The top hit http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/discussion/2073450-minecraft-realms-review explains that it's server software hosted at Mojang. Thanks to Aaron Schwartz and Jeff Kuhn we have a server running from Ohio University, so there is no need for us to take a hosted option, though that is what many schools do. Also, a popular hosting service popular in education settings is provided by MinecraftEdu, https://minecraftedu.com/hosting.
So you don't need realms, and regarding a free download for Windows 10, you can try the one you have and download for W10 if appropriate. I can't speak to that one either though.
I believe Teacher Rose Bard mentioned she had purchased a realm. If so, has she tried it?
OK, I don't need Realms, and now I am wondering if I needed to download anything. It doesn't work with the drivers I have. Wonder if once I am added to the OU server if I can go there to play without dealing with the driver issue.
You can play the game in creative or survival mode on any stand-alone PC or tablet running Minecraft, but in order to connect with us you need to enter our server name and IP address in the copy of the Minecraft "client" you are running. If your OU server will allow that, it will work. But we have some knowledgeable experts here who might be able to help you with your driver issues as well. I've got MC downloaded onto several PCs and I'm able to get the client going on all these devices.
When we get going Jan 10 we'll inform those who join us (via email) of our server address, and we'll be white-listing approved user names on our server.

Done. Both sons offered to help me. I must admit I like the feeling that they are going to help and guide me now.
Reply DeleteYou are fortunate, though we are all fortunate to have Filip and Carlos with us, not to mention Jeff, to help us overcome our Noobie hurdles
